ARTIST STATEMENT:
Edwin Bethea’s recent works are an analysis of reality. A physical reality juxtaposed with perception. Conceptually the paintings consist of opinions, experiences, or contemplation of his subject. The linear qualities often present themselves as an abstraction that metaphorically speaks for one portion of the two worlds he attempts to establish. There is a metamorphosis that takes place from the subject that exists physically to his own psychology. The happenings in the works create, nurture, and destroy each other within the confines of the picture plane.
Artist BIO:
Edwin Bethea was born in Philadelphia P.A. At a very young age he was a creator. Popsicle stick houses and Mother’s Day cards soon became live models and still lifes. After many extra curricular courses, contests, events, and exploration of materials, Edwin enrolled at the Maryland Institute College of Art under a presidential scholarship.
The completion of his BFA sparked a sense of curiosity in what existed outside the confines of one’s habitat. He traveled throughout the countryside meeting, interacting, and internalizing a country that is composed of millions of microcosms. What began at the Maryland Institute as an expression of one’s being, spawned into an everlasting voyage of experience and interpretation. Graduate studies
and Drawing 1 course instruction at Arizona State University was his last stop before his Los Angeles residency, where he
now resides. His recent works are a mastery of the past, interpretation of the present and an anticipation of the future. |
